A Dynamic Week

The activities that take place during a typical week at Dynamic cater for a varied age range of youngsters with a variety of differing disability of various kinds.

Monday

This group meets every week except for Bank Holidays. It comprises of severely disabled young people who are all P.M.L.D. This means that they have a multiplicity of disability and special needs. This group is very heavily staff intensive because of the high level of need of the youngsters attending. The staff have many tasks to perform including changing, feeding (some need naso-gastric and tube feeding which can be very time consuming). Some of the youngsters suffer from epilepsy and drug treatment has to be administered by trained staff.

The group work on developing the senses of the youngsters, with action and reward toys and with many sensory stimulation toys and apparatus.

Tuesday Juniors

This group meets every other Tuesday and is for children between the ages of 8 and 10. They meet to enjoy play, fun and friendship. Basic skills of turn taking, sharing and encouraging them through play and craft activities. The activities are chosen after discussion with the children.

Tuesday Seniors

The object is to bring on the skills they have already learned in Tuesday Junior group, before moving on to Wednesday group. Age 10-13

Wednesday

This group comprises of youngsters aged between 13 and 16 years of age. They are a lively group with many and varied interests. The time is spent on a variety of activities such as swimming, a personal care project, games and activities. All the activities are geared to increasing the skills of young people to enable them to become more independent such as money handling, road safety, personal safety, relationships, etc.

Thursday

This group comprises young people aged from 16 to 19 years of age. They also take part in activities that will increase their skills and enable them to become more independent. This helps their self-esteem and confidence.

Friday

There are two groups that meet each Friday.

The first is a Friday Girls Group of teenage girls with disabilities. This group meets to enjoy activities that increases their confidence and raises self-esteem.

Friday 1925 Club is the second group. This group came into being when some of the young people reached 19 years of age. They had no other social outlet for them to access. The Trustees of Dynamic envisage that at some stage this group will become self-funding, although this has not happened yet. This is due in part to the fact that the members of the group are largely those with a learning disability in addition to their other disabilities. They have the services of 2 members of staff, they are supported by volunteers who enable the members of the group to access social activities such as ten pin bowling, cinema, visits to sports and social clubs and the pub.

Saturday

This group meets on alternate Saturdays with the aim of enabling youngsters with disabilities to go into town to do things that other teenagers do such as choosing their own CD’s, cosmetics, snacks, games, window-shopping, etc. Visits to local beauty spots, attractions, country parks, etc. The group plays an active part in determining their own programme.
